We Moved ... (our blog, that is)

We moved to another blog site (WordPress) since we manage our other blogs over there. If you came here, you likely went to http://themuhlesteins.blogspot.com rather than http://www.muhlestein.net. See ya there!

They're off!

Nick got his braces off last month. After five years of orthodontia, he is finally done. I feel so sorry that he had to inherit his father's teeth. But luckily we live in a day when that can be fixed. So here is Nick with new beautiful teeth.
Only three more kids to go.

Painting

My friend, Stephanie, and I are trying to paint on a monthly basis. Last month I painted a musical montage for my piano room. This month I painted owls. Each owl represents a person in my family, and they are proudly displayed in the media room.

It took me an entire hour just to pick the colors, then another four hours to finish. Luckily, Stephanie has a giant blow-up waterslide that occupied the kids for most of our painting session. Maybe we shouldn't try to finish in one day. Kids and paint and a light-colored carpet. What are we thinking?

We Love Our Teachers

The last day of school is crazy. Imagine four kids and three different schools and needing to be at end of year parties and award ceremonies for all of them. Rob and I managed to spit up and cover most of it.

This year I went overboard with the teacher presents. They all deserve so much more, though. Gordon's teacher is being cut next year, Ethan's teacher (who is my favorite kindergarten teacher ever) will never have another one of my kids in her class, Ben's two incredible teachers have seen him through two years of AIG, and Nick's technology teacher gave Nick a bunch of his old computer equipment. So the boys wrote their teachers and their assistants cards, which included two movie passes each for the local theater. We love our teachers!

I didn't get pictures of Nick and his tech teacher, because Rob went to that ceremony and I had the camera.

RIP Remmy

Our beloved little hamster, Remmy, died May 30, 2009. Remmy was our third hamster. We lost Hamo when we lived in AZ (see his funeral here), and had to give away Yamo when we moved from AZ. Remmy died of natural causes.Yes, he is dead in this picture.

I wrapped him in a white cloth and then we put him in a box. I made a headstone, and Nick wrote on Remmy's 'coffin.' We buried our friend at the base of a tree in our backyard.

Mourners included the neighbors, who were dressed in swimwear, heading to the pool.
We sang a song and each said something we remembered about Remmy.

He was the fastest hamster we ever had, but if we ever lost him in the house, all we had to do was leave his cage open on the floor, and he'd come back.

NY Anniversary

Rob and I had our anniversary May 1st, but decided to delay the celebration until the end of the month. I had my heart on attending Book Expo America (BEA), so we postponed any celebrating and money spending until then. To see New York was our gift to each other. This was only our second get away together for more than just an overnighter in seventeen years. I think it was about time.

Day one:

After taking the train into the city and finding our hotel, we gave ourselves a walking tour. I was fairly proud that we didn't resort to taxi service the entire time. We got ourselves Metro passes and traveled by bus and subway. The subways reminded me of the ones in Russia, except without the grand mosaics, statues, and frescoes. These were just gray tunnels. Since it was Memorial day, there were folding chairs set up all over Times Square.
People watching, eating, shopping, and street entertainment filled most of the day.

Rob thought I should get a psychic reading. No joke! He thought it would be fun, and it might have been, but the psychic wasn't in. Guess she couldn't see paying customers coming her way.

Here Rob is making friends with the kebab guy. If you get a street kebab, get the chicken. The beef one is kind of chewy.

And you can't deny a free National Hebrew hotdog. They were passing them out at Times Square.

That evening we met with some friends from Second Life. Okay, sounds weird to find people you meet online, but they were so terrific. They took us to yummy Thai restaurant, to central park (picture on Imagine memorial), then to get the most decadent dessert in that restaurant from You've Got Mail where Meg Ryan waits for her secret online friend to meet her. Sort of ironic, huh?

Day two:

Spent almost the entire day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When we got back home my sister said, "You know that fee to get in is just a suggested price. You can really pay whatever. A dollar if you want." A little heads up next time.

For dinner, Rob's coworker and wife took us out for sushi. A wonderful meal and great company with genuinely caring people. I could shoot myself now, because I didn't get any pictures of them. I must have been too engrossed in the conversation.

Day three:

Alicia's Day: Spent at BEA (click here for details)
Rob's Day: Spent at the Hudson bay with a couple friends looking at ships. It was fleet week.

We went to see Wicked on Broadway. I'd have to say I was somewhat disappointed. I expected much more. More dancing. More scenery changes. More memorable songs. The storyline was stale with an unrealistic love story and forced angst. Would whats-her-face really turn Wicked because they were taking away the people-animals? I think they should have ditched that concept and just played up her outcast situation. I couldn't even sing one of the songs now. Too many words packed into blase tunes. And when the wicked witch was singing to her love (can't remember his name), they were just kneeling on the floor the whole time. MOVE! You're boring me. I did enjoy Glenda's role, though; they did an excellent job with her. I wish we would have seen Billy Elliot. I know I'd be enthralled with the dancing.I can't end on that. So I'm gonna say it...I'm gonna say it...I LOVE NEW YORK!!

JUMP!

Gordon got a sprinkler for his birthday-a wiggly waggly hose with tiny hoses spraying everywhere. It's great fun, and it waters the lawn.

Gordon turns 9!

May 17
Gordon's birthday

Since his birthday was on a Sunday this year, I took the cupcakes to class on Friday.

Gordon and his best friend Luke. He's on the phone with him right now. They are such good buddies. Once Gordon came home crying, and when I asked him what was wrong, he said Luke got into a fight with another boy in the bathroom. Gordon was worried Luke would be suspended. Then he was worried that Luke would grow up to be a tough boy and they couldn't be friends anymore. Everything has been straightened out now.
Gordon got $20 from grandma & grandpa Muhlestein, Bakagun from grandma & grandpa Walker, Battle Forge (video game), bubble gum maker, and a sprinkler.

Ethan turns 6!

May 12th
Ethan's Birthday:

I brought cupcakes to his class. He wanted chocolate/vanilla swirl cupcakes with vanilla frosting and long sprinkles (not the circle sprinkles). They were very specific instructions and I think I delivered.

Here is Ethan & his teacher, Ms. Kinney.

Ms. Meadows (class assistant) delivered the birthday spanks.

Everyone loves cupcakes!

He received $20 from grandma & grandpa Muhlestein, Bakagun from grandma & grandpa Walker, a fishing pole, a tennis tetherball set, and a bubble flyer. And there was cheesecake!
